In which the 'student' demonstrates their knowledge to the 'teacher' of various parries inspired by the devices against attacks at various openings.

Note that the cut sequence oberhauw/zwerch/mittelhauw/unterhauw is carried through all of the parrying sets, however variations on each of the parries can be performed against other cuts (the "response to an oberhauw" for example, can equally be used against a zornhauw or other attack). These movements aren't intended to be used "as is" in free-play, but rather teach body movement and important sword handling principles.

[edit] 1. Response to an Oberhauw

An oberhauw parrying against an oberhauw, this is intended to provide a general high cover, as well as demonstrate the following handworks:

Meister Lehrling
Vom tag, left leg forward Vom tag, left leg forward
Passing Step Oberhauw Passing Step rear right (in the manner of a Cross Step backward), cut an Oberhauw behind the Meister's blade, increasing it's momentum and driving it to the ground.
Cross the hands to bar them below the blade (Sperren), then lead leg Gathering Step to the Meister's left with a rising slice to their arms or face (Schneiden).

[edit] 2. Response to a Zwerch

An oberhauw parrying against a zwerch, this is intended to provide a general high cover, as well as demonstrate the following:

  • Zwerch counter

Meister Lehrling
Vom tag, left leg forward Vom tag, left leg forward
Passing Step Zwerch Passing step back with the lead leg, cut an Oberhauw at the Meister's strong into an Eisenport like position, thus parrying with the long edge
Cut a zwerch back around to the other side. Step forward to the left with the lead leg and cut a swift Zwerch to the left of their neck underneath the Meister's zwerch, parrying and striking in one movement.

[edit] 3. Response to a Mittelhauw

An oberhauw parrying against an mittelhauw, this is intended to provide a general high cover, as well as demonstrate the following handworks:

Meister Lehrling
Zornhut, left leg forward Vom tag, left leg forward
Passing Step Mittelhauw Passing Step back, Oberhauw to Langort, striking the middle of the Meister's blade to deflect it
Hold Langort and gather forward with a thrusting slice to the face.

[edit] 4. Response to an Unterhauw

An oberhauw parrying against an unterhauw, this is intended to provide a general high cover, as well as demonstrate the following handworks:

Meister Lehrling
Nebenhut, left leg forward Vom tag, left leg forward
Passing Step Unterhauw to lower opening Passing Step to the rear right, cut an Oberhauw to their strong (the can also be done with the flat).
As soon as the blades clash, twitch over into a Sturtzhauw to the head.
