Over Gripping

An occasional and unusual use of the sword in which the sword is reversed (Verkehren) and the lead hand grips over onto the schilt of the sword to strongly press the hands and block the opponent's movement. From here the fencer can move in to grappling, or cut away with strikes.

Application Examples

In which the 'student' demonstrates their knowledge to the 'teacher'.

Application 1: Overgripping Against Cuts

In this application the technique is being used in the Krieg following a parry in the Onset. In this case the fencer is acting Indes.

Meister Lehrling
Zornhut, left leg forward Wechsel, right leg forward
Passing Step forward to the right with the right foot, cut a Zornhauw to the upper left opening. Unterhauw parry with a step forward and left with the left foot.
Overgrip the blade (Ubergreiffen), reversing (Verkehren) it, so the point is to the right and lays over their sword or arms and wrench right (Außreissen).
