Note that the cut sequence oberhauw/zwerch/mittelhauw/unterhauw is carried through all of the parrying sets, however variations on each of the parries can be performed against other cuts (the "response to an oberhauw" for example, can equally be used against a zornhauw or other attack). These movements aren't intended to be used "as is" in free-play, but rather teach body movement and important sword handling principles.

In which the 'student' demonstrates their knowledge to the 'teacher' of various parries inspired by the devices against attacks at various openings.

Contents

[edit] 1. Response to an Oberhauw

A crossguard/strong parrying against an oberhauw, this is intended to provide a general high cover, as well as demonstrate the following handworks:

Meister Lehrling
Vom tag, left leg forward Eisenport, left leg forward
Passing Step Oberhauw Gathering Step forward Kron parry
Shove up and to the side (Außreissen) with the crossguard.
Bring the sword around over in a false edge cut with crossed arms overhead, cutting down vertically at the upper right opening/right shoulder.
Swipe away the incoming cut with the long edge Keeping the downward momentum bring the sword around past the left side and around overhead in a circle ((Zirckel), then take a broad Glide Step to the left, cut with the long edge and extended arms, leaning away from the Teacher's sword reach.

[edit] 2. Response to a Zwerch

A crossguard/strong parrying against an zwerch (or zornhauw) , this is intended to provide a general high cover, as well as demonstrate the following:

  • Sword taking

MeyerHaftGrab.png
Meister Lehrling
Vom tag, left leg forward Eisenport, left leg forward
Passing Step Zwerch Crossguard catch in the angle of the long edge and crossguard beneath the blade
Lift the blade and Gathering Step forward left, releasing the left hand and grasping the Meister's haft between their hands, palm away from them. The right hand keeps the sword trapped so they don't move away to their left with it.
Bring their haft out to the left then with a Passing Step back bring it straight down to your mid thing to unbalance/disarm them. Cut with the right hand.

[edit] 3. Response to a Mittelhauw

A crossguard/strong parrying against a Mittelhauw, this is intended to provide a general side cover, as well as demonstrate the following handworks:

LapelGrab.png
Meister Lehrling
Zornhut, left leg forward Eisenport, left leg forward
Passing Step Mittelhauw Gathering Step forward, crossguard catch in the angle of the long edge and crossguard beneath the blade.
Lift the blade and release the right hand, take a Passing Step with the right leg, so your right leg is behind theirs, hip to hip.
Let the blade fall behind you with your left hand, and drive the right hand up over the Meister's left shoulder or grasp their collar beside the left of their neck, in readiness for a throw/choke (Einlauffen).

[edit] 4. Response to an Unterhauw

A crossguard/strong parrying against a low cut, this is intended to provide a general lower cover, as well as demonstrate the following handworks:

Teacher Student
Nebenhut, left leg forward Eisenport, left leg forward
Passing Step Unterhauw to lower opening Gathering Step forward left, crossguard catch beneath the long edge.
Triangle Step to the left with the right leg, cut down with the long edge and crossed wrists to bar their blade from above (Sperren) and strike the back of their lead leg, thus we bar and strike in one motion.
