Blind Strike

Longsword

A secondary strike which uses winding with the opponent's blade inside your own to cut their head to the inside.

The blind strike demonstrates the handwork of winding (winden) both to the inside and outside.

Execution

  • In the bind wind to the left as if you're attacking with a point/slice to the left side of their head.
  • As he pushes this aside to his left, wind deeply to your low right so the false edge of the sword flicks inward against the left side of their head.
  • Wrench left with the cross, or just wind back the right (into a pflug on the left side), and continue the fight.

Notes

The first part of the blind strike varies through the text. In the canonical description it is a wind from the bind, whereas elsewhere it is begun with a strike with the inside flat of the blade. The important part seems to be the outward wind and the threatening of the face with the point, be it flat or pointed.

Applications

In which the 'student' demonstrates their knowledge to the 'teacher'.

Application 1: A Blendthauw showing Winden (winding)

In this application the flick is a Hitter in the Middle of an exchange. In this case the fencer is acting in the Indes during the fight.

The blind strike is an instance of winding - in this application we're using winding both to the left and to the right to demonstrate it.

Teacher Student
Gerade versetzung, right leg forward Gerade versetzung, right leg forward
Wind winden to the low left to thrust or cut to the face with a Glutzhauw like motion (to "draw" a parry to their left)
Parry/swipe the cut to the side Step to the left and wind winden to the low right with crossed arms (following the movement of their parry) and flick the false edge to their left ear in the winding.
Withdraw (Abzug) with a defensive high cut or a guard.

Notice that we must present a credible threat with the initial movement so the opponent feels compelled to parry to the side. If we don't do this we risk leaving his point online.

Dussack

A secondary dussack strike which winds the false edge to the opponent's face just as the longsword version does.

Execution

  • He attacks you from above.
  • Go up with an Entrusthauw to parry the blade with your point turned to your right.
  • Wind high right to cut around his blade with the false edge to his face.
  • Briefly turn the dussack back toward your high left to cover against his blade.
  • Gather forward right and cut with the long edge to his face.

The winding part of this attack is really the "blind strike" part of the motion, with everything else providing context.
