Parts of the Staff

Like the longsword the staff is broken into several parts for descriptive purposes.

While the staff can be used with either end forward we will describe one end as being the "point" or weak because it is useful to do so and is relevant when using the pike and halberd.

The table below summarises the parts of the staff.


Part Description
Weak The top quarter of the staff with which strikes are performed.
Strong The region between the top quarter and the lead hand - used for parrying and winding.
Haft The area between the hands - used for parrying
Butt Projects behind the rear hand - some strikes, and wrenching.
