Like the longsword the staff is broken into several parts for descriptive purposes.
While the staff can be used with either end forward we will describe one end as being the "point" or weak because it is useful to do so and is relevant when using the pike and halberd.
The table below summarises the parts of the staff.
Part | Description |
---|---|
Weak | The top quarter of the staff with which strikes are performed. |
Strong | The region between the top quarter and the lead hand - used for parrying and winding. |
Haft | The area between the hands - used for parrying |
Butt | Projects behind the rear hand - some strikes, and wrenching. |
